La Trobe Street, Melbourne

La Trobe Street (also Latrobe Street〔(Register of Geographic Names, searchable online at )〕) is a major street in the central business district of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It runs roughly from east to west and forms the northern boundary of the CBD (known as the Hoddle Grid).
La Trobe Street is home to a number of precincts and types of public and private spaces. The Carlton Gardens lie at the eastern end of the street, and the western end is at Victoria Harbour in the Docklands precinct. Before Docklands was developed, La Trobe street ended just beyond the Spencer Street intersection. The Flagstaff Gardens are located at the corner of La Trobe and King Streets.
Notable buildings along La Trobe Street include the State Library of Victoria, Etihad Stadium, the Family Court complex, the former Melbourne Mint, Melbourne Central shopping complex, the former Russell Street Police Headquarters (now residential apartments) and sections of RMIT University (including the former Magistrates Court and Mechanics' Institute), and the William Angliss Institute of TAFE.
Two underground railway stations lie beneath La Trobe Street (Flagstaff and Melbourne Central). A number of tram routes travel along La Trobe Street, including the City Circle and No. 24, 30 and 34.
La Trobe Street was named after Charles La Trobe.
